Hi, my name is Martin, I live in Bonn, Germany and I’m originally from Berlin. After graduating from high school with the mainfocus in Art, I didn’t know exactly what career path I should take and played with the idea of โโstudying art or painting.
My French teacher said: “Martin, Artists don’t earn a lot of money! Become an engineer.” At this point of my life, natural sciences were abstract and incomprehensible throughout the school days – an engineer’s study seemed quite absurd. Nevertheless, without thinking much about it, I applied to the University of Applied Sciences FHTW Berlin (today HTW Berlin) in the study course of “Technical Facility Management”.
This meant that all subjects of science, which I had almost completely departed in high school, were now on the daily agenda. Fortunately my lecturers and professors at the FHTW succeeded completely in inspiring me with natural sciences. They did an amazig job to teach me mathematics and physics. Since then I thank them every day with all my heart. In 2007 I successfully completed my engineering degree as a graduate engineer with a Diploma.

Why this blog?
The fact that my professors and lecturers succeeded in explaining complex scientific facts to me in a simple and comprehensible manner, made me think a lot. For a lot of people with a technical background it is really difficult to explain technology easily and understandably to the layman.
This often leads to misunderstandings between people with technical background and people without technical knowledge. Misunderstandings during the building process of a house or a technical installation can lead to frustration, even if the installed system works properly.
With this website I would like to overcome this barrier. Building Services, which includes thermodynamics, electrical engineering and physics, is not as difficult as many think. I will therefore address topics from the field of building technology and explain them in a clear way.

My Job
After my engineering studies in 2007 I started in a small engineering office in Berlin and analyzed the building technology of over 150 schools in different parts of Germany within 1.5 years. In June 2009, I moved to the “Energy and Waste Management Sectionโ of the Facility Management Service of the federal state of Schleswig-Holstein in Kiel (North-Germany). My main focus was to optimize the energy performance of buildings and their technical installations, advising building operators and building users as well as establishing new technologies in the area of โโbuilding technology.
Iโm craving for knowledge and I am always happy to work on new topics. So I decided to study again in 2010. The choice was made for the Master’s degree course “Business Consulting” at the Wismar University of Applied Sciences in North Germany – a degree program for business management with a focus on corporate consulting. I also successfully completed this degree as a “Master of Business Consulting” in November 2012 .
From October 2014 till December 2015, I have been working at the Institute for Federal Real Estate (BImA) as a consultant for building tasks. In November 2015 I decided to start a business with two friends. We have invented the MOKAN probably the most brilliant charcoal grill lighter in the world ๐.
However, the field of building technology is a part of me and I can’t without. So I have come to the conviction to look for a part-time job, where I can be close to my passion. Since May 2017, I am working in the construction department at the University Hospital of Bonn as project manager and specialist planner for building technology to optimize the technical installations and rise the energy performance. In terms of its complexity the technology in a university hospital is hard to beat . Here all building technology trades meet each other with the highest quality and demand enormous attention. What a fun!
My hobbies
In addition to my professional activities, I do a lot of sport, I like to hike and travel through the world. Beside different styles of Martial Arts are jogging, fitness, skiing and many other sports on my favorites list.
In 2012, I decided to walk the 800 km long St James Way from Sean-Jean-Pied-de-Port to Santiago de Compostella. A great experience! Living five weeks out of the backpack, only to get along with the essentials and to deal with little contact at home, change the way of looking at the regular everyday life. After that I hiked a lot of other Caminos and Hikes around the world. Unter my Hiking Blog www.hikejunkie.com you can read more about my adventures. The following picture shows me on the Sierra High Route in 2019.
Besides my sporting activities, I am a passionate guitar and chess player. If you want, you can send me a challenge at Chess.com (72h time is optimal). I also still paint pictures at regular intervals.
